ETTRICK, VA- Virginia State University and the Department of Athletics named Dr. Henry Frazier, III the 26th Head Football Coach on Tuesday, May 10.
"Coach Frazier is no stranger to CIAA Football. He is a talented coach who will provide the leadership for our football student-athletes on the field, in the classroom and within our community," said Davis. "The wealth of knowledge Frazier brings to the VSU Trojans football program is highlighted through his countless championship titles, Coach of the Year honors and Hall of Fame inductions."
Prior to his arrival to VSU, Coach Frazier served as the Director of Leadership and Character Development for the University of Maryland (UMD) football program. His move to UMD kept him in the Maryland area footprint; a familiar community for him as a native of Washington, DC. Serving on the football coaching staff at Bowie State University as an assistant from 2017-2019, Coach Frazier contributed to the Bulldogs success to include their 2018 and 2019 CIAA Championships and NCAA Playoff appearances.
Frazier took part in several years of success with Bowie State (as head coach from 1999-2002), with a 2002 CIAA Eastern Division title, CIAA championship game appearance and a 26-24 career record (the most wins in school history at that time). His BSU accolades (as a standout quarterback student-athlete at BSU from 1986-1989 in addition to his coaching and leadership success) resulted in Coach Frazier's induction into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and his 2002 team being inducted into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
Alongside gaining personal academic achievement from Bowie State (obtaining his bachelor's in 1993 in Physical Education and his master's in 1999 in School Administration/Supervision), Coach Frazier gained knowledge and coaching success from Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) as well.
Prior to earning his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from PVAMU in 2015, Frazier spent seven years (2003-2010) as the head football coach, leading one of the greatest turnarounds in NCAA history. He took over a program that experienced the nation's longest losing streak from 1989-98, dropping 80 straight contests prior to his arrival. Frazier and his staff built one of the top programs in the country securing winning seasons, championships, national rankings, and coach of the year honors. He also became the first African American and the first coach from a historically black college or university to receive the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award, given annually by The Sports Network to the top coach in the Football Championship Subdivision. Under Frazier leadership, PVAMU defeated every SWAC institution.
After leaving PVAMU, Frazier became head football coach at North Carolina Central University from 2010 -2012 and led them to their first winning season since 2006 with a 6-5 record in 2012.
Frazier's insight to develop and educate the youth also reached s to the high school level. Frazier began his career after graduating from undergrad as a "Leader of Men" at Central HS in Capitol Heights, MD where he was a teacher and head football, wrestling and baseball coach. In his final year at the high school, Frazier was named Vice Principal where he was able to implement "FALL" Football And Life League, a program designed to uplift young men through applying life and athletic skills to boys ages 10-18 in order to excel both on and off the field of play. Frazier went full circle in 2014 in returning to his professional beginnings, Prince George's County Public Schools—serving as Athletic Director for Bladensburg High School until summer 2016, he then moved on to be the Athletic Director and Activities Coordinator at The Historic Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Washington, DC—"The Nation's First High School for African Americans."
Knowing that GREATER Happens at VSU, the Trojans are eager to enter a successful era of football under the leadership of Coach Frazier.
"I want to thank Dr. Abdullah, AD Davis, and the entire search committee for giving me the opportunity to return as a head collegiate football coach—a position and responsibility I take extremely seriously," said Frazier. "VSU is a proud institution of higher education with a great tradition and proud alumni, and it is my honor to serve this community as its head football coach. I so very much look forward to meeting the student athletes, putting a committed staff together, and continuing the winning ways of VSU Football!"
VSU Athletics will open the 2022 football season on the road on Saturday, September 3. The Trojans will take on the Bears of Lenoir- Rhyne University in Hickory, NC.
