NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State Athletics Director Marty L. Miller has announced the hiring of James Inzana as the school's head softball coach. Inzana arrives at NSU after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Division III national champion Virginia Wesleyan.

"We are excited about the hiring of James Inzana as the head softball coach," said Miller. "Based upon his experience, knowledge of the local talent in the area, and principles in teaching the fundamentals of the game, the objective of winning conference championships in the near future is attainable."
Inzana previously served for eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Virginia Wesleyan softball program. He helped guide the Marlins to Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles in 2011, '13, '14, '16 and '17.
The 2017 team achieved success never before seen in the program. Virginia Wesleyan won a national record 54 games on the way to earning the program's first-ever national championship. Inzana, who coached the pitchers, hitters and infielders, led a pitching staff that ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 0.80 ERA.
Inzana coached 12 All-American performances, seven ODAC Pitchers of the Year, two Schutt/NFCA National Freshman of the Year award winners and one National Player of the Year during his time with the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan players earned four VaSID State Pitcher of the Year awards, 32 VaSID All-State honors, 30 All-Region accolades and 47 All-ODAC honors during Inzana's time with the program.
He retired from active duty in the U.S. Navy in 2005 after 20 years of service. He coached at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake from 2001-08 as the JV head coach and assistant varsity coach. Inzana has also coached numerous travel ball teams.
He earned a bachelor's degree in education and computer information systems from Liberty in 2009 and a graduate degree in sports management in 2012.
Inzana replaces previous head coach Heidi Cavallo, who resigned in September to pursue other career opportunities. Cavallo led the Spartans to 122 overall wins during her head coaching tenure and a runner-up finish at the 2013 MEAC tournament.
