From 2013-15, Mayo was the Assistant Athletics Director for Development at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, where he led the fundraising arm of WCU's Department of Athletics. His responsibilities also included capital campaign planning, directing former student-athlete initiatives and supervising the men's and women's track and field programs.

"Jamaal brings a wealth of experience to our team. His diverse background in an array of areas in college athletics will prove beneficial to the NCCU Athletics program,” said NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree. “His proven success in athletics fundraising will definitely enhance our ability to improve athletics revenues and developing relationships with our donors and business partners."

Mayo is a 2003 graduate of Western Carolina University, earning his bachelor's degree in sports management while also playing quarterback for the Catamount football program.  Mayo returned to his alma mater in August of 2006 to work in the Office of Admissions as the senior assistant director of admissions focusing on minority student recruitment, after a brief stint with the Durham Bulls as the team's group ticket sales associate.

After one year in admissions, Mayo transitioned to the WCU Department of Athletics where he served in several capacities, including the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services and Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities & Operations, before accepting the development role in 2013.
