Alcorn State University has chosen Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas as its new head volleyball coach. ASU Director of Athletics Derek Horne made the announcement late Friday afternoon.Lucas-Nicholas
She replaces former coach Jarquita Copeland.
Lucas-Nicholas is no stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, as the Grambling State alumna anchored the defense for the Lady Tigers volleyball squad in the mid 2000s. A former first-team selection, Lucas-Nicholas won the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year award while leading the league in digs (396) and helping guide the Lady Tigers to the conference championship.
Following her graduation, Lucas-Nicholas got her start in the coaching ranks at Terrebonne High School (Houma, La.) and also served as head coach of the Bayou Bandits, a Houma-based club team, in 2007. She was then hired as Houma Junior High's head volleyball coach in 2009 before taking the same job at Riverside Academy (Reserve, La.) in 2011.
Also in 2011, Lucas-Nicholas was named club director of the Louisiana Southern Swing Volleyball Club in the midst of immediate success at Riverside. She led the Rebels to back-to-back LHSAA Division IV semifinal appearances in 2012 and 2013. Lucas-Nicholas spent this past year as head volleyball and track and field coach at East St. John High School (Reserve, La.).
