DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman University Men’s Head Basketball Coach Gravelle Craig has announced the appointment of Chrys Cornelius as assistant coach.bcu chrys corneliusCornelius

Cornelius, 42, comes to B-CU from Wisconsin - Green Bay, where the Phoenix have won 95 games, including a 48-17 record the past two seasons. In 2013-14, Green Bay won the Horizon League and made an NIT appearance. Along with on-court coaching and recruiting duties, Cornelius handled scouting responsibilities, and scheduling. In January of 2015, Cornelius was ranked as the top assistant coach in the Horizon League by Next Up Recruits.com. Cornelius recruited Keifer Sykes, the two-time Horizon League Player of the Year.

“We are excited to have Chrys join us,” Craig said. “He is someone I have known for over 12 years. His passion for basketball and recruiting history speaks for itself. He has won everywhere he has been. He will be a valuable asset to our coaching staff.”

It’s a return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for Cornelius, who helped lead Florida A&M to NCAA tournament appearances in 2004 and 2007. He recruited four of the five starters on the 2007 NCAA Tournament team - all from the Chicago area.

Prior to Green Bay, Cornelius spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University (2007-10). He has also had two different coaching stints at his alma mater Western Illinois, Chicago State (2003) and the junior college ranks at Joliet Junior College (Ill.) and Jacksonville (Texas) Junior College.

Smith, who played collegiately and graduated from the University of New Orleans, also coached at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Mississippi Valley State, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Centenary College and Southeastern Louisiana.

"I've known Mike for a while," Hayes said. "He won a championship at Valley and has (played professionally) overseas."

A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Smith received his master's from William Carey University and was selected to participate in the Black Coaches Association/NCAA Achieving Coaching Excellence Program in 2011.

"I'm thrilled to be at Lincoln," Kerr said. "The opportunity to coach in the MIAA, which is the league I played in, is outstanding. I especially want to thank Betty Kemna, Willie Jude, Dr. Rome and the search committee for giving me that opportunity. I'm very excited to meet the returning players and the incoming recruits and to work with them this upcoming season."

During his only season at Alderson Broaddus, Kerr coached five All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference players, including two first team selections, and led the Battlers to a berth in the GMAC tournament. Kerr coached Alderson Broaddus to 21 victories and posted winning records both at home and on the road. Four of Kerr's players, including GMAC Freshman of the Year Samantha Turner, were named to league's all-freshmen team.

Prior to taking over at Alderson Broaddus, Kerr spent three seasons as the softball coach and athletic director at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan. In his first season in 2012, Kerr took a Tiger squad that had been shutout in league play the year before and coached the squad to six conference wins. Throughout his three years with the team, Kerr coached multiple all-league and all-academic honorees. Under Kerr's direction, Central Christian improved its academic performance, posting a team GPA of 3.51 in Fall of 2013. Kerr left the Tigers as the team's all-time winningest coach.
