Weight Room Named for Clark-AU Strength and Condition Coach

It’s been 24 years since Clark-AU lost W.Earle Wilson Junior, arguably one of the most effective and talented strength and conditioning coaches in the HBCU family. Honors for the man called “Coach Earl” include a scholarship established and underwritten by his family.

Now, through the Clark-Atlanta Athletics Boosters Association, the school’s weight room has been named for Wilson, who was also a football and track coach and a bodybuilder. A number of former CAU grads talked about Wilson’s tough but fair program to keep them in shape as they worked out at the former Future Man’s gym not far from campus. Seems the only thing left to make it official is placement of the sign on the conditioning room door…………

Ms. Young Is a native of Atlanta, graduate of Luther Judson Price High School, CAU and a member of its board of trustees. I’ve been privileged to know Carolyn since she and I attended Atlanta’s Union Baptist Church …..

SIAC HOOPS: mhc grady brewerBrewerGrady “Brew” Brewer’s Morehouse Maroon Tigers (1-0),(6-2), off since December 10, hit the hardwood New Year’s eve on the road against Lemoyne-Owen (1-1) (1-5). Morehouse is second in the SIAC’s eastern division and CAU is third with a 1-0,6-4. CAU’s start and position in the east so early-on, bodes well for first year head coach Darrell Walker……

The next time the local folks will see SIAC basketball will be January 5. Morehouse will host Kentucky State and CAU is home to SIAC west division leader Central State ((2-1)(5-5) at Epps Gym.

XTRA POINTS: Ever wondered what the Atlanta Falcon cheerleaders are paid for performing at Sunday home games? For years, many fans thought they worked for free. Well, they can’t retire off the money they make and many howl and call what they do get “peanuts”, they get $75 a game but aren’t paid for practice hours. By the way, of the 28 ladies who put on the uniforms to dance and prance for at least three hours a game, six of them are African-American and three of them are products of historically black colleges. They are Jasmine C (Bethune –Cookman), Eieshe H (Norfolk State) and Tanesia D (Spelman College)….

I checked the rosters of the teams in the WNBA. Still no players from HBCUs. I wonder why?.......

chico renfroeRenfroeA STREET FOR CHICO?: One time Negro League baseball star Othello “Chico” Renfroe is reportedly about to have a roadway named in his honor. A street that runs through southwest Atlanta’s Washington Park has reportedly been approved by the city council. The street currently has no name. The park’s softball field had already been named for him. Locally, Renfroe was known for his daily radio show and his sign-off, “the game of life is never over until the final whistle has blown.” Official dedication services for Chico Renfroe Drive” are pending…….
