Spirit Award
Finalists have been announced for the Fifth Annual Spirit Awards (Paul "Tank" Younger Trophy), a syndicated television program recognizing the top collegiate football players from historically black colleges. All finalists were determined by a survey of head coaches, sports information directors, NFL professional football scouts and sportswriters.

This year's event will be hosted by ESPN sports anchor Stuart Scott. The keynote speaker will be Minnesota Vikings head coach Dennis Green. A host of celebrity guests will serve as presenters. The program will tape on Thursday, February 11, 1999 at the Universal Hilton Hotel in Universal City, CA.

This year's event will introduce the Gale Sayers Lifetime Achievement Award, which Gale Sayers will personally present to fellow Hall of Famers, David Deacon Jones.

Walter Payton will receive the Spirit Achievement Award for outstanding career achievement.

Tennessee State University head coach Lawrence "L.C." Cole will be honored as Coach of the Year.

The Annual Spirit Awards is a one-hour, nationally televised show produced by The Rutherford Group. The survey is governed by the accounting firm of Strabala, Ramirez & Associates.
