By Hal LamarMorehouse Provost John Hopps has given Doug Williams permission totalk to Grambling about an impending head coaching vacancy. GSU head football coach Eddie Robinson is slated to retire at the end of the season.
Williams confirmed the action during a late Sunday night appearance on a tv sports show, "Sports Unlimited" in Atlanta. Williams told anchor Bill Hartman that Hopps informed him that "It was perfectly allright to talk to them." after Grambling hadcalled the school.
" Let's be realistic, " said Williams. " You gotta go and listen topeople if they're gonna talk. I think any man who has an opportunity ofa job should take the opportunity to listen."
Williams refused to speculate on whether he'll take the job, if offered, but it would be one that would be difficult to refuse. Williams was born and raised in Zachery Louisiana, which is just a few miles from Grambling. He is one of the school's most recognized alums andas a former high school coach there, has strong ties to the BayouState; ties that he has yet to establish in Atlanta and Georgia.
Williams is signed to a 5 year deal with Morehouse which reportedlyearns him six figures, making him a likely second only to Morehouse President Walter Massey in salary.
Williams maiden voyage at Morehouse started like a house afire but has sputtered of late. Things were compounded three weekends ago when his team engaged in a bench clearing brawl with Albany State. Game film reviewed by the SIAC showed Morehouse the clear instigator.
Several ofWilliams' first teamers were benched, including his productiveplacekicker Marcus Shaw. The team is now 2-4.
