In a surprise announcement, Virginia State University Athletic Director Alfreeda Goff, has resigned as head of the Trojan's intercollegiate athletic program.

Appointed in 1994 by VSU president Eddie N. Moore, Goff had made significant impact on the program. "Without question, she was a tremendous asset to Virginia State University's athletic program. She will be missed," said Moore.

Goff's interim replacement will be Edward Cooper, currently VSU's Director of Institutional Research. Cooper, a 24 year veteran at VSU, had been responsible for compiling all of the University's surveys and statistical data and reporting all information to the Virginia State Council of Higher Education.

"I have known Cooper for many years," said Dr. Claud Flythe, VSU's chief of staff and vice president for student affairs. "We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber available to step into this position and help us while we conduct a search for an athletic director. He knows the program, he knows budgets and I expect that he will go in there and hit the ground running."

"Quite naturally I am very pleased about being selected as interim athletic director," stated Cooper. I am excited about working with the student athletes and coaches. Ms. Goff left the department in good shape and I'm looking forward to picking up where she left off.

Among her major accomplishments as AD, Goff added three sports and enhanced the women's sports program. She re-established the co-ed golf team and added women's tennis as a sponsored sport. Her leadership was significant to the completion of the Whaley M. Colbert Baseball Firld and the renovation of locker rooms, offices and facilities for the football program.

During her tenure, VSU teams captured three CIAA conference championships. The Trojan baseball team won the 1998 CIAA Championship and the football team secured consecutive CIAA championships in 1995 and 1996.

This year VSU won the C.H. Williams All-Sports Trophy for athletic excellence in men's sports in the CIAA. VSU coaches Terrance Whittle (baseball) and Reva Green (softball) were named 1998 CIAA Coaches of the Year.

Goff credits the VSU student athletes, her coaches and support staff for her success.

"I've had a wonderful group of students and coaches to work with and a very supportive administration. Had it not been for all those individuals, my job would have meed much more difficult," she commented.
