J. Michael Wilson Gets Promotion at U.S. Olympic Committee

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --The United States Olympic Committee has named J. Michael Wilson, Director, Visitor Center and Community Relations, effective immediately according to USOC Executive Director Dick Schultz.

"Michael has done an outstanding job managing the day-to-day activities, coordinating the tour program and directing the general business at our new Olympic Visitor Center," Schultz said. "The Visitor Center is our main attraction for the public at the Olympic Complex. Michael and his staff, have put our Visitor Center on the map as one of the popular local attractions in Colorado Springs, in addition to helping it become a national attraction, where tourists can come and learn about our Olympic athletes and the Olympic Movement," Schultz said.

Wilson, who joined the USOC in January 1994, shifted to the position of General Manager of the Olympic Visitor Center after serving as an assistant director in the USOC Public Information/Media Relations Office for three years. He came to the USOC from North Carolina Central University where he was Sports Information and Marketing Director from 1991-93. Prior to that appointment, he held positions as the assistant sports information director at Southern Methodist University (1989-91), sports information director at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (1988-89) and was a graduate assistant SID at Florida A&M University (1987-88). He also interned with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League in 1985.

A graduate of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Wilson has helped coordinate U.S. media operations at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga., and the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. He served as the newsletter editor at the 1995 Pan American Games in Argentina and served as the head press chief at the 1995 Winter World University Games in Spain. He has also served on three U.S. Olympic Festival staffs (1993, 1994, and 1995).

"This promotion is testimony to Michael's talents and organizational skills, as well as the impact and positive benefits of our new facility," Mike Moran, USOC Assistant Executive Director, Media and Public Affairs said. "The Olympic Visitor Center and our Tour Programs continue to grow and prosper while bringing the USOC to thousands of people from our city and across the nation in a special way," Moran said.
