Former Norfolk State sprinter Tim Montgomery is continuing to makehis mark on the world track scene.
The 1996 CIAA 100-meter champion and Olympic silver medalist is coming offa third place (bronze medal) finish in the 100-meters at the World Championshipin Athens, Greece earlier this month where he ran a personal best 9.94. He finished behind world champion Maurice Greene (9.86) and Canadian world-recordholder Donovan Bailey (9.91) and just nosed out Olympic silver medalistFrankie Fredericks of Namibia (9.95).
The third-place finish was the highlight of his experience in Athens butthere was a downside. Running the second leg in the semifinal of the 4 x100 meter relay for the U. S. team, Montgomery and former Norfolk Stateteammate Brian Lewis missed connections and caused the team to bedisqualified. Montgomery won a silver medal at the Atlanta Olympics as amember of the 4 x 100 meter relay team
Montgomery has shaken that off and continued to run well overseas in InternationalAmateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) Grand Prix events. He matched his personalbest in finishing third behind Fredericks and Greene in Brussels, BelgiumAug. 22. He won at Monte Carlo Aug. 16 with a 9.9 clocking and he placedthird in Zurich on Aug. 13 with a time of 10.05. In his most recent outing,he placed second to Bailey with a time of 10.01 sec. in the Cologne (Germany)Grand Prix. (Aug. 24).
