Pittsburgh, PA - The SBN Sports Network, a division of American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) named its 1997 Black College All-America Team. Florida A&M University led the way with five players selectedFAMU quarterback Oteman Sampson is the Offensive Player of the Year. North Carolina A&T lineman Chris McNeil is the Defensive Player of the Year. Joe Taylor, coach of the National Champion Hampton Pirates, is the Coach of the Year.
Sampson, a senior signal caller, led the MEAC in passing yardage, throwing for 330 yards per game. He threw 25 touchdown passes. Sampson was also named MEAC offensive player of the year.
McNeil, a senior defensive end, was the MEAC's defensive player of the year. His 21 sacks set a conference record. McNeil led the entire nation, at all levels, in sacks.
Coach of the Year Taylor, led the Pirates to a 11-2 overall record. Hampton ran off 10 straight wins during the season. The Pirates were not beaten by a Black College team. Taylor previously won the award in 1994. The 1997 SBN Sports Black College All-America Team will be honored at a gala banquet Saturday, February 21, 1998 at the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta. During the past 24 years, over $1.2 million in scholarships has been donated to Black colleges and universities through the SBN Sports Black college All-American Awards Banquet. AURN is the only African-American owned radio network in the United States with offices and bureaus in New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.
