Norfolk State wins Virginia All-State Sports Survey

Norfolk State University has captured the 1996-97 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Division II and III All-State Sports Survey title. The title goes to the school with the best overall winning percentage in athletic competition.

Competing in their final season at the Division II level, NSU's Spartans and Spartanettes compiled a .662 overall winning percentage (157-80-1) to take the crown. The Spartanettes compiled an overall record of 79-38 while the Spartans finished 78-42-1.

Christopher Newport University placed second with a winning percentage of .649. Mary Washington College came in third overall with a winning percentage of .614.

Mary Washington College, a member of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC), won the most championships during the 1996-97 athletic season with ten. The school from Fredericksburg, VA picked up CAC titles in baseball, women's lacrosse, women's and men's soccer, women's and men's swimming, women's tennis, men's cross country and women's & men's track and field.

Roanoke College dominated the Old Dominion Athletic Confrerence winning five ODAC titles in women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse and men's and women's track and field.

Norfolk State captured four Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles, winning crowns in women's and men's cross country, softball and men's tennis.

In the women's division, Norfolk State took top honors followed by Christopher Newport (79-39, .669) and Bridgewater (82-44, .651).

Washington & Lee University came in first in the men's division compiling an overall record of 87-40 (.685). Mary Washington was second (84-39-1, .685) followed by Norfolk State.
