Marty Miller Honored with Fifth Louisville Slugger Award

January 29, 1998

Norfolk State head basketball coach Marty Miller has been presented the 1997 Louisville Slugger Award, recognizing him as one of college baseball's championship-winning coaches.

The award honors coaches who have led their respective teams to either regular-season or conference championships. In five years, Miller has led the Spartan program to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships and three CIAA regular-season titles.

Miller is one of the few college coaches who have earned the award in all five of the years the program has existed.

"It's always a good feeling when you receive national recognition because it says that someone thinks you've done a good job, "Miller said. "The most significant thing is I've been fortunate enough to win each year of the program's existence. I think that's a very difficult thing to do."

Miller, a 1968 Norfolk State graduate and former baseball player himself, has coached the Spartan baseball program for the past 25 years. During that period, NSU won 17 CIAA conference titles while helping Miller establish a 580-342-3 career record. He was named CIAA Coach of the Year 15 times and was honored last year by having the Spartan's new baseball stadium named after him.

The award program is managed by Host Communications, Inc., in conjunction with the American Baseball Coaches Association and Hillerich & Bradsby Co., Inc., manufacturers of the Louisville Slugger baseball bats.
