John Lee White Jr., former head track coach at Hampton University, died Sunday following a bout with cancer.
White passed away Sunday, June 8 at the age of 70.
He retired from Hampton in 1992 after 18 years' as assistant professor of physical education, health and recreation. As the trackcoach at Hampton, he had served as the meet director of many track and field events, including two NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.
He was a USA Track and Field official and had also served as a longtime football assistant coach at the university.
After serving in the Army during the Korean War, the Canonsburg, Pa native, went on to receive two master's degrees, one from Slippery Rock University in physical education and the other from Old Dominion University in recreation. He had served as an educator and coach in Pennsylvania and West Virginia before moving to Hampton.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret P. White; three sons, Richard J. White of Houston, TX, John A.White of Falls Church and Donald E. White of Hampton; one brother, Walter O. White of Tallahassee, FL., and seven grandchildren.
The family has requested that memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society, 303 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA 23666-1521.
