Bibbs Announced Staff Appointments at Hampton

 April 25, 1997

Hampton University's new head women's basketball coach Patricia Bibbs has appointed Jerry Lewis and Anthony Portley as assistant coaches. "They come with great credentials", said Bibbs. "I know they will also be great as assistants for this program. They know about winning and they are outstanding young men", she stated.

Lewis served on Bibbs' staff at Grambling State for three years. He is a 1979 graduate of Northwestern State in Natchitoches, LA. Lewis was a starter throughout his collegiate career, first at Southwest Missouri State for two years, then at Northwestern State. The Grambling, Louisiana native led his high school to its first-ever state championship.

Lewis has a Masters degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State. His responsibilities will include working with the post players for the Lady Pirates, conditioning, clinician work and serving as recruiting coordinator.

Portley joins the Hampton staff after a successful tenure as head women's coach at Western Texas College. He has also served as assistant women's coach at West Texas A&M, and head women's coach and assistant men's coach at Ranger College. While at Ranger, he guided the women's team to the junior college regional playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

The Greenville, Texas native is a 1990 graduate of Abilene Christian University. His responsibilities will include scheduling, academic advising, recruiting and working with the guards.
