Hampton, VA.... Bryone Samuels hasresigned as head basketball coach, and Steve Merfeld has been appointed interim head coach at Hampton University. Samuels resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at the University ofTennessee. Merfeld was Samuel's top assistant during the past (1996-97) year."Obviously I'mdisappointed that Coach Samuels has decided to leave, but I do wish him and his family well in theirfuture endeavors. I appreciate his contribution to our basketball program," stated Hampton Athletic Director Dennis Thomas.
Samuels had served as head basketball coach during the past two seasons, and compiled a 17-36 won - lost record during the Pirates move from Division II to Division I competition.
"This decision is difficult because of the relationships established with our players, Dr. William Harvey andDr. Dennis Thomas. Not to mention a host of others in the Hampton University family," statedSamuels.
"The University of Tennessee offers me and my family opportunities that only a few of the nation's colleges and universities can offer. More important is the opportunity to work with a mentor, and someone who has meant more to me than anyone outside of my family, in Jerry Green. Fifteenyears ago, Jerry visited me and my family and convinced me that UNC-Asheville was the best placefor me to continue my education and career. It's the best decision I have ever made. Joining him onthe staff at Tennessee is easy in that regard."
According to Thomas, Merfelds' appointment as Samuels replacement was important, because a solid foundation has been built to achieve success in the upcoming year. "I'm pleased to name SteveMerfeld as interim head coach. It was important that we maintain stability and continuity with the program, given the time frame of Samuels departure. Merfeld will continue to move the programforward and he will be successful, " Thomas said.
Merfeld stated, "This is certainly a great opportunity for me. I realized at a very early age that basketball was going to be a very integral part of my life. I'm grateful to Dr. Harvey , Dr. Thomasand Hampton University for the confidence that they have in me. I am extremely confident that we will be able to continue the success that Coach Samuels started. These kinds of opportunities onlypresent themselves a couple of times during a coaching lifetime."
Prior to joining the Hampton staff last season, Merfeld served as an assistant at Bowling Green State University for seven years. During his tenure, Merfeld's duties included midwest and Ohiorecruiting, and he was credited with signing BGSU star Antonio Daniels who was recently the number four pick of the 1997 NBA draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Merfeld is a 1984 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse with a bachelor's degree in physical education and in 1987 he received his master's degree in athletic administration from Bowling Green.
