After 13 successful years at Grambling State University, Patricia Bibbs is moving across country to become head women's basketball coach at Hampton University. Her appintment was announced by Dr. Dennis Thomas, HU Director of Athletics."We are elated that Coach Bibbs has decided to come to Hampton University. She brings impeccable credentials and a phenommenal record," Thomas said. "We look forward to her building a winning program here at Hampton."
Bibbs guided the Lady Tigers of Grambling State to their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season championship and second consecutive tournament title. Her team's 14-0 regular season conference record was the first time in the history of the SWAC that a women's basketball team had gone unbeaten in conference play. Bibbs has an impressive 244-124 record including a 24-6 finish this season. In her 13 years as a collegiate head coach, she has garnered eight 20 plus win seasons and was named SWAC Coach of the Year seven times.
"I'm very excited about the move," Bibbs said. "It's a great opportunity for my family and me. Hampton wants a first class program and I feel in my heart we can be successful. There is a total commitment from Dr. William Harvey (Hampton's President) and Dr Thomas and it's been my goal to work in that type of environment," she stated.
Bibbs is bringing championship expreience to Hampton. During her tenure at Grambling, the Lady Tigers won six SWAC regular season championships and four tournament championships. The Lady Tigers have been to the NCAA playoffs for three of the last four years. This year they lost to eventual national champion Tennessee in the first round.
"My goal at Hampton is not to just go to the big dance, I want to win," Bibbs affirmed. "That's the commitment that Hampton has made and I'm definitely looking forward to the challenge."
A native of Monroe, LA, Bibbs is a 1972 graduate of Grambling State and was a successful high school coach at Ruston High (3 years) and Dubach High (6 years) before taking the job at Grambling. She was named Louisiana High School Coach of the year in 1981 and 1983. While at Dubach, her teams made the playoffs every year and won the state title in 1983.
She is married to Ezil Bibbs, a former football standout at Grambling who, in additional to over ventures, worked as an annuoncer for the school's football broadcasts. The couple has two daughters, Sabrina and Satin.
