Hampton University has named Steve Merfeld as men's basketball coach.
"I'm pleased to remove the interim status from our head basketball coach position," said Dr. Dennis Thomas, Hampton Director of Athletics. "Coach Merfeld did an excellent job in moving the program forward this season."
Serving as the top assistant during the 1996-97 season, Merfeld was appointed interim head coach when Byron Samuels resigned to take a position at the University of Tennessee last June.
"I want to thank Dr. William Harvey (President), Dr. Thomas and Hampton University for this great opportunity," Merfeld stated.
Merfeld guided the Pirates to their first winning season in Division I (14-12) and an impressive third place finish in the MEAC with an 11-7 record.
"We were able to make excellent strides this past season and we plan on working towards making Hampton University a top notch Division I program," said Merfeld.
