Two Fort Valley Track Athletes Qualify for the NCAA D2 Outdoor Championships

May 18, 1998

Hosea Laney and Dorsett Ward, both members of the Fort Valley State University Wildcat track team, received good news this past weekend. They both qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, May 21-23.

This will be the second consecutive year that Laney, a native of Warner Robins, GA has qualified for the National Championships in the 110 meter high hurdles. Laney's qualifying time of 14.14 seconds was the eighth fastest in the nation this year.

"I'm really happy to be heading back to the Championships," stated the 6'4, 185 lb junior. "Getting a chance to compete for a national championship is an experience that you never forget, and I have been fortunate enough to do it twice." Laney's qualifying heat will start at 7:10 p.m. (cdt) on Friday, May 22.

Dorsett Ward will represent Fort Valley State in the long jump. This will be Ward's first trip to the NCAA outdoor meet, and he hopes to do well. Ward made the cut with a jump of 25'5" at the Savannah State Invitational in April.

"I hope to do well at the Nationals," stated Ward. "This is a real exciting moment for me." Ward, who hails from La Grange, GA is a 5'7, 145 lb. sophomore. Ward will compete in the long jump beginning at 6:00 p.m. (cdt) on Thursday, May 21.

For Fort Valley State head men's track coach Glen Turner, traveling to the National Championships has become a normal routine. For three consecutive years, Fort Valley has had a participant in the NCAA Outdoor meet. "This is the payoff for season's worth of hard work," stated Turner. "Both Hosea and Dorsett have performed well for us during the entire track season, and to have a shot at a national title is outstanding."

This will be the fifth time in six years that FVSU has been represented at the NCAA meet.
