The Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's College look to successfully defend their title, today, at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After jumping out to a first day lead, St. Aug only scored five points on the second day. They enter the final day of competition in third place behind Abilene Christian and Lewis College.
Thursday, Shnaka Walker, Nicole Irving and Lisa Taylor finished 1-2-5 in the women's long jump to propel St. Augustine's into the top slot. Walker finished fourth in the high jump to give the ladies from Raleigh, N.C. a team total of 27 points going into the final day. Walker, Irving and Maria Steadman are scheduled to participate in today's women's triple jump final.
St. Augustine's has qualifiers in nine of today's 13 final events. Shanique Musgrove was the top qualifier in the javelin. Denise George will compete in the shot put.
Both the 4X100m and 4X400m relay teams from St. Augustine's have qualified for the finals finishing second and third overall in preliminary heats.
North Carolina Central's Elisha Marshall goes for a 100m - 200m double. She came out of the preliminaries as the top qualifier in the 100m dash with a time of 11.80. She had the third best qualifying time in the 200m after winning her heat with in 23.80 seconds.
Marshall will be joined in the 200m final by Tara Myrick of Lincoln University and St. Augustine's Juliette Brown.
Lincoln's Traci Jeffery will join Marshall in the 100m final this evening at 7:20pm (CST).
Today's men's events will feature defending high jump champion Gregory Roberts from Morehouse. Roberts, who set a Division II record last year at 7' 5", has a qualifying height nearly 1-inch above his nearest competitor.
Top qualifier St. Augustine's, Morehouse and Kentucky State will compete in the finals of the 4X100m relay.
St. Aug's men's team is currently fifth in the overall standings thanks to a 3-8 finish by Lancelot Gooden and Cleveland McClory in the long jump and a fourth place finish by Frederick Adongo in the 10,000m run on Thursday. Adongo is scheduled to run in the 5,000m run today.
Other Black College representation in today's finals includes Rodriques Pfister (St. Aug), Michael James (St. Aug) and Chris Galimore (Livingstone) in the 400m hurdles; Jerome Young (St. Aug) and Gabriel Burnett (St. Aug) in the 200m dash; Deworski Odom (St. Aug), Eric Dabner (Lincoln) and Jerome Hamler (Morehouse) in the 100m dash and Momodou Prammeh (Morehouse) in the 800m run.
Today's final events begin with the men's javelin at 2:00 pm and conclude with the men's 1,600-Meter Relay at 9:30 pm. The championship is being held on the campur of Southern Illinois Univesity in Edwardsville, Ill.
