Record Breaking performances highlight Black College participation in NCAA Division II Indoor Championships

Two Black College athletes broke meet records and another captured a national title at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis, March 13-14.
Morehouse College high jumper Gregory Roberts successfully defended his national title with a jump of 7' 3 3/4" (2.23m) breaking the meet record he set last year. Jerome Young of St. Augustine's, 1995 national junior champion, broke the meet record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 46.13 seconds. Young's accomplishment eclipsed the record set by former St. Aug sprinter Ryan Hayden in 1995.
St. Augustine's claimed another national title in the 55 meter hurdles when Deworski Odom edged teammate Gabriel Burnett by .04 sec. to capture first place with a time of 7.34.
St. Augustine's finished second in men's team competition behind Abilene Christian. The Falcon men scored 43 points. Morehouse finished fourth with 20 points.
In women's competition, North Carolina Central's Elisha Marshall was denied a national title for the second straight year. The top qualifier going into the finals, Marshall was defeated by Calister Uba of Harding College, 6.90 to 6.95 sec.
Last year Marshall lost to Lincoln University's Bev Grant by .002 sec.
St. Augustine's finished fourth overall with 31 points. Marshall's performance and eight points allowed N.C. Central to finish in a tie for 14th place.
