Nashville, TN - Johnny "Ballpark" Franks has announced his resignation as sports information director at Tennessee State University effective February 10, 1998. He plans to pursue other opportunities, including establishing his own multi-service marketing and public relations firm.
Franks was in his tenth year as TSU's sports information director. Prior to joining the staff at Tennessee State, Franks was the director of publicity for the Nashville Sounds baseball club from 1986 to 1988.
A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Franks received a bachelor's degree in marketing from Florida State University in 1985. In addition, he graduated with honors from Tennessee State in 1995 with a master's degree in business administration.
Franks, 34, has received numerous national and regional honors for his work at TSU. He has been the recipient of the Cal Jacox/Champ Clark Award for three out of the last six years. The award is given to the top sports information director from an Historically Black College or University.
In addition, he claimed the 1997 Tennessee Sports Writers Association's best press release award for Division I schools.
Frank's sports publications have received annual awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America since 1988. His football media guide earned a best cover award and top seven finish in 1996 in the NCAA I-AA category.
