Montgomery, AL - Ron Mitchell has announced his resignation as head women's basketball coach at Alabama State University.
Mitchell, 60, compiled as 115-209 record in 12 years as the Lady Hornets head coach, including this season's 10-17 mark. His best seasons came in 1988-89, when his Lady Hornets went 16-14 and in 1993-94, when they were 15-13.
His career record spans over 18 years with a mark of 176-274. He reached the pinnacle of SWAC coaching in 1989, when his team won the SWAC Tournament Championship. This year, the Lady Hornets lost in the first round of the SWAC Tournament to second seeded Alcorn State University, 77-63.
A native of Chicago, Mitchell broke the color barrier when he accepted the head coach position at Boston University in 1971. He coached there for three years and at Grinnell college in Iowa for two seasons before returning to his alma mater, Kentucky State University. At KSU, he took over a 7-10 women's basketball team at midseason and led them to 11 straight wins, including the 1981 NAIA Championship.
"Coach Mitchell's service, dedication and tenure to the Alabama State University Athletic Department is appreciated and well respected", said Athletic Director Dr. Curtis Williams. "As we begin the process to find a capable replacement, assistant coach Peggy Keebler, has been named as interim coach to continue to move the program forward."
