Alcorn State and Grambling may play in Germany

May 17, 1997

The Associated Press is reporting that Alcorn State and Grambling State may play their 1997 football season opener in Germany.

Alcorn State officials report that a deal is in the works to move the August 30 game to Frankfurt, Germany. The game is currently scheduled for Jack Spinks Stadium in Lorman, Ms, the Braves home field.

Alcorn State's President Clinton Bristow said "It's close to being a done deal, but it is not signed, sealed and delivered."

Bristow indicated that the U.S. Army would pay expenses for the football teams, the bands and a limited number of staff members. There is also a possibility that the American Forces Television network would show the game with distribution back in the U.S. through ESPN.

The Army is interested in sponsoring the game as entertainment for personnel stationed at bases across Germany. The game is also seen as a recriutment tool.

According to Bristow, if an agreement is reached, "they would be the first historically black schools to play in Europe." "It's a good opportunity to showcase out talent in Mississippi," he said.
