Alcorn State University has picked Dr. Johnny D. Thomas as head football
coach. The selection was announced by ASU president Dr. Clinton Bristow
at a press conference, this afternoon in Lorman, MS.
Thomas, a native of Heidelburg, MS, has been out of coaching since 1989 where he was assistant head football coach, defensive special teams and recruiting coordinator at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He also served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama State in 1986.
He beat out three other finalists for the position.
"All of the finalists presented great credentials and each carried good merits, but Thomas had the experience on the field as a coach and the dedication toward educational success that we want to instill into our student-athletes at Alcorn State University," said Bristow.
Currently, Thomas is an assistant professor of Health and Physical Education at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He is a 1978 Alcorn State graduate with additional experience as the linebackers, defensive ends and special teams coach at Mississippi Valley State from 1980-86.
As a player at Alcorn State, Thomas was a three-year starter from 1973-77 and NAIA All-American linebacker in 1976 and 1977.
He holds a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia with further studies at Ohio State University.
His publications include a 1993 comparative analysis of leadership styles
of head football coaches from traditionally black and white colleges and
universities.
