Hampton, VA....Hampton University announced today that the Pirates and the Tarheels of the University of North Carolina, will meet in basketball during the next three seasons. The two will meet for the first time during the upcoming season in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, December 16, and the Tarheels will return the date next season at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates will return to Chapel Hill during the 1999-2000 season.HU Director of Athletics Dennis Thomas stated, "This is a tremendous opportunity for our basketball program to play one of the premier, if not the premier program in America. In addition, playing UNC at Chapel Hill and to have them come to the HU Convocation Center is truly outstanding. Hopefully this will encourage other outstanding programs to play HU, not only at their arena, but here on our campus."
The Pirates are entering their third year of Division I competition, and their match- up with UNC will be Hampton's first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) encounter.
HU first year head coach Steve Merfeld is also elated, "The opportunity to play an ACC caliber school like North Carolina is a great experience for anyone. Anytime you can get a top twenty team to come to your home sight is certainly a great advantage in a number of ways. I know that our kids will rise to the occasion, and represent Hampton in a very positive way", Merfeld said.
