  • Penn Relays Results
    A crowd of nearly 40,000 fans, the fourth largest in history, turned out last weekend for the 109th running of the famed Penn Relays and received quite a treat as black college athletes again distinguished themselves at Philadelphia's historic Franklin Field.

    Early in the week Robin McClain of Florida A&M won the college women's heptathlon piling up 5,025 points. Six-time NCAA champion Jason Smoots of North Carolina Central won the college men's 100-meter dash in a time of 10.44 seconds. Smoots is the first Eagle to win the 100m dash at the prestigious Relays.

    St. Augustine's Anwar Moore won the men's 110-meter hurdles championship beating Texas A&M's Chris Pinnock by .11 seconds. Moore was runner-up in the event at the CIAA Track and Field Championships.

    South Carolina State's David Stephens won the college men's pole vault having the fewest number of misses at the winning height of 16'5".

    Florida A&M won the college men's 4x100m relay in a time of 40.19.

    In one of the featured events of Saturday's final day, the Verizon men's 4x100 meter relay, former Norfolk State sprinter and current 100-meter world record holder Tim Montgomery anchored the USA Red Team to victory in a time of 38.62 seconds.

    In other results, St. Augustine's finished fifth in the Championship of America 4x400 relay. Former St. Aug quartermiler Jerome Young ran a 43.2 split while running the second leg for the winning Visa 4x400m relay. Former Alabama A&M standout Jearl Miles-Clark ran the second leg on the winning women's Visa 4x400 meter relay team.

  • Bowling? Yes, Bowling
    The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks bowling team wrapped up a fabulous season last weekend as one of 16 teams in the nation at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships (IBC) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    UMES is the first black college to make it to the 'sweet 16' of the sport which will become a full-fledged NCAA sport next year. In the competition, UMES qualified at 15th and faced #2 Florida State, a team they defeated earlier in the season. FSU won the competition four games to one.

  • Tennis playoffs
    Morehouse has received an at-large invitation to the NCAA Div. II Tennis championships joining SIAC champs Fort Valley State (men) and Clark-Atlanta (women) and CIAA champs J. C. Smith (men) and Fayetteville State (women).
