TENNIS - The Southern men's and women's tennis
team defended their conference tennis crowns, claiming 4-3 wins
over Alcorn State at the 2003 SWAC Men and Women's
Tennis Championship on Saturday.
GOLF - The Jackson State men's golf team won its
16th straight championship with a 20-stroke win over
Texas Southern. Glyn Bateman of Alcorn State
who shot a 5 under par for the tournament, was the top individual finisher and the only player
to finish under par on the 7,040-yard, 72- par Lake Windcrest
Golf Course in Magnolia, Texas.
After leading by ten strokes on the first day,
Southern's needed one playoff hole to defeat defending champion
Jackson State. JSU's Precious
Johnson was the top individual finisher with and even par 144 for the two days of the tournment.
CIAA
Saint Augustine's College captured its seventh
consecutive women's team title and sixth straight men's team title at
the 2003 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on a
chilly and damp Saturday at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC.
The St. Augustine's women scored 209 points, the
highest team total in three years, while Shaw
University and Virginia State
University tied for second place with 95 points each.
The St. Augustine's men had its toughest competition
since last losing the title in 1997, edging second place
Livingstone College by a score of 191 to 144.5.
Virginia State took third place with 88 points.
Libia Rodriquez of St.
Augustine's was recognized as the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after winning
the 200-meter (23.91) and 400m (53.90) dashes, placing
second in the 100m dash (12.12), and running on the
victorious 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads. Teammate
Cadriesha Akinfe won the triple jump (12.38m) and placed second in
the long jump (5.73m) to earn her second straight Most
Outstanding Female Field Athlete award.
Livingstone sprinter Jordan Vaden won the
100m (10.53) and 200m (21.02) dashes to reclaim the Most
Outstanding Male Track Athlete honor, while fellow Blue
Bear Patrick Wright was selected as the Most Outstanding
Male Field Athlete after winning both the shot put (45' 4.75")
and discus throw (140' 1"). Final results are available on

SIAC
TENNIS - The Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta
and the men of Fort Valley State took home the 2003
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SIAC) Women and Men Tennis Championships held April 18th and 19th
at Morehouse College.
In the women's division, the Lady Panthers of
Clark Atlanta University advanced to the championship match
for the third consecutive year and knocked off Tuskegee
for this year's title. Tuskegee. With the win, the Lady Panthers
were crowned SIAC Champs for the second time in three years
and they now advance to NCAA regional play.
In men's play, history was made when the
Wildcats upset the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse in the
championship match. For 25 of the last 27 years, the Maroon Tigers had
been crowned SIAC Men's Tennis Champs. The win by the
Wildcats was their first conference title under Head Coach
Willie Foster. The 5-4 win by the Wildcats also propels them
into their first NCAA regional appearance.
BASEBALL - Albany State beat Paine
6-3 in the final game of the tournament to take home the baseball
championship Saturday. The Golden Rams had beaten Paine 8-1 en
route to advancing to the finals. Paine beat ASU in Saturday's
first game 9-2.
SOFTBALL - Kentucky State got its second win
over Fort Valley State, 15-6, in the tournament's final game
to capture the SIAC softball title. Benedict's Ericka Green
won the most outstanding hittter award while
Michelle Gurrerro of KSU was the outstanding pitcher.
TRACK and FIELD - Albany
State (286.5) knocked off seven-time defending men's champion
Morehouse (205.5) and Fort Valley State
won its third straight championship outscoring
Albany State, 284-236 in outdoor track and
field competition.
The Most Outstanding Track Athlete Award went
to Nathaniel Roberson of Albany
State University who scored 49 total points in 7 events (110HH, HJ, PV, DT, JT,
SP, Dec).The Outstanding Track Athlete award for the men
was presented to Josiah Lagat of Morehouse. The
Outstanding Field Athlete award for the men was given to
Alvin Smith of Fort Valley State. The Outstanding Field Athlete award for
the women was given to Jessica Escobedo of
Fort Valley State while teammate Latosha
Rogers won the Track award.
