JSU TO NAME ANDERSON: Jackson State University
set a press conference for Wednesday, April 9, to name
Tevester Anderson, who recently retired after five years
as head coach at Murray State University, as its new men's head
basketball coach. Anderson, 66, a 1962 graduate of
Arkansas AM&N (now Arkansas-Pine
Bluff), compiled a 103-52 record during his stay at MSU and
led the Racers to two Ohio Valley Conference championships and
two NCAA Tournament appearances. His team finished 17-12 this season
losing in OVC Tournament semifinals to top-seed Austin
Peay. In his first season at MSU in 1998-99, Anderson won
OVC Co-Coach of the Year honors and was named NABC
District 7 Coach of the Year for guiding the Racers to a 27-6
record and an OVC title. Anderson was named the school's
12th head basketball coach on March 27,1998. Prior to coming
to Murray State, Anderson was an assistant at the University
of Georgia (1986-95) and Auburn University (1980-86) after
a successful stint as a high school coach. Jackson State
let Andy Stoglin leave after 14 years as coach. His record
was 197-216, with two trips to the NCAA tournament.
Jackson State went 10-18 this season.
ALCORN CHOOSES WEST: The Alcorn State
University athletics department has officially announced the promotion of
assistant men's basketball coach Samuel
West to the rank of head coach pending approve by the school's board of
trustees. "His outstanding knowledge of the game, strong recruiting
background and great rapport with the student-athletes, university
personnel and supporters demonstrates his readiness for the assignment,"
said ASU Athletic Director Robert H.J.
Raines. West replaces longtime head coach Davey L.
Whitney who officially announced his retirement at the conclusion of this season. West, a
Natchez, Mississippi native, received his undergraduate degree
from Texas Southern University in 1977 after leading the
Tigers as team captain to Southwestern Athletic Conference
and NAIA national titles. In 1980 he earned a master's
degree from Jackson State University. West has spent the
previous seven seasons as the Braves' assistant basketball coach
and was instrumental in helping Alcorn State win its last
three regular season Southwestern Athletic
Conference titles along with the team's last two trips to the NCAA
tournament. West had successful stints as a high school head coach and
as an assistant at Delta State before coming to Alcorn
State. "Coach Sam West brings a wealth of experience and talent
to the Alcorn State University program. I think that he is a
very outstanding young coach," said Whitney.
BACK IN THE SADDLE: Former Howard University
head football coach Steve Wilson will be
Bowie State University's new defensive coordinator and assistant head
coach next season. Wilson, a Howard graduate who led the Bison for 13
years after a ten-year career in the NFL, was named to the position by
head coach Henry Frazier in a press release from the school Tuesday.
Wilson will take over a defense that ranked second in NCAA Div. II football
last season keying the Bulldogs run to the CIAA
E. Div. title and a spot in the conference's championship game. Wilson will be
replacing John Morgan who gave up the position to become the
new head coach at Fort Valley State. "It's an honor to have
the opportunity to come here because I see this program as
one that is skyrocketing," said Wilson, who was let go at
Howard following the 2001 season and spent last year away
from football. Wilson compiled a 78-67 record while leading
the Bison.
