What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
MEAC'S BEST:
Howard guard Ron Williamson and Florida A&M center
Kim Watson were named Mid Eastern Athletic Conference players
of the year and led voting by the conference's basketball coaches and sports
information directors for the all-MEAC team. Williamson, a 6-1 senior from
Columbus, Ohio, leads the conference in scoring at 22.8 points per game
including a high of 52 points that is the largest single game output in
Howard history and the most this year in NCAA Div. I basketball. Against
conference competition, Williamson averaged 25.2 points per game while shooting
52% from three-point range and 89% from the free throw line. South Carolina
State guard Thurman Zimmerman, a 6-5 sophomore from Columbia,
S.C., was named the conference's rookie of the year after averaging 15 points
and 7.4 rebounds. Watson, a 6-2 center from Clewiston, Fl., beat out Hampton
senior guard LaShondra Dixon by just one vote to win the women's
award. Watson is averaging 18 points and 10.5 rebounds for the Rattlerettes
making 52% of her shots from the field and getting 1.12 blocks per game.
Five-eight Bethune-Cookman freshman guard Katie Clark of New
Iberia, La., who averages 10.7 points and 3.4 assists per game was named
the women's rookie of the year. Cy Alexander of league-leading South
Carolina State was named coach of the year.
2002-2003 MEAC All-Conference Team
SWAC TRACK RESULTS: The Alabama State women and Southern
men indoor track teams dismantled all-comers in the 2003 Southwestern
Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championships held in Baton Rouge,
La., over the weekend. Alabama State earned 162 points, outdistancing
second place Texas Southern (115.5) by 46.5 points in the women's
competition. Southern nearly lapped the men's field scoring 180.5 points
to 85 points by Alcorn State. Noeleene Harris of Texas Southern
earned the women's Most Valuable Track Performer finishing first in the
1,600 meters (5:19.96), 3,000 meters (10:45.52) and 3,000 meters (19:10.08).
The women's Most Valuable Field Performer went to Alcorn State's Tiffany
Hardison who earned points in five events; Triple Jump-1st (12.00m),
High Jump-2nd (1.67m), Pole Vault-3rd (2.13m), 55m Hurdles-5th (8.35)
and Long Jump-8th (5.42m). Francis Korir of Alabama State earned
the men's Most Valuable Track Performer with stellar finishes in the 1,600m-2nd
(4:26.52), 3,000m-1st (8:58.85) and the 5,000m-1st (15:45.37). The men's
top field performer was Louie Dixon of Alcorn State, who earned
points in four events; High Jump-4th (2.06m), Long Jump-4th (7.02m), Triple
Jump-4th (14.55m) and the Pole Vault-6th (3.05m). The following is the
