BCSP Notes . . .
- Big Ben to Start
Former Virginia Union standout and Detroit Pistons center
Ben Wallace has been elected as a starter for this year's NBA
All-Star Game to be held Feb. 9 in Atlanta's Philips Arena.
Wallace, a seven-year NBA veteran, will be making his first
all-star appearance after leading all Eastern Conference centers
garnering 1,123,090 votes. Wallace nearly had a two-to-one margin over
the next Eastern Conference center in the voting, New Jersey's
Dikembe Mutombo who tallied 610,232. Wallace's total was the seventh
highest overall among all NBA players on the ballot.
Wallace currently leads the NBA in rebounding (14.7 rpg.)
and is second in blocked shots (2.76 pg.) while helping the Pistons to a
29-15 record, second best in the Central Division.
- The Barber's Back
Ken Free, Commissioner of the Eastern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (EIAC), has appointed Larry
Barber to the staff post of Publicity and Media Relations Coordinator.
The move is a professional reunion, the two having worked
and collaborated for 18 years in the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference (MEAC) front office. Free, who has guided the EIAC since
1996, tabbed Barber primarily for the 2003 basketball tournament
push. The EIAC men's and women's tournaments will be held February
28 through March 2 (Friday-Sunday) in Fayetteville, N.C. at
the Cumberland County Coliseum Complex-Arena.
The EIAC includes Allen (Columbia, SC),
Barber-Scotia (Concord, NC), Claflin
(Orangeburg, SC), Edward Waters (Jacksonville, FL),
Morris (Sumter, SC) and Voorhees (Denmark, SC).
