- Seventh-three year-old Alcorn State head coach Davey L.
Whitney, who is retiring at the end of
this
season, won the 500th game of his illustrious career with the Braves
Monday with a 79-50 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Whitney has
555 career wins which includes a stint at Texas Southern.
In July, 2002, Whitney became the first-ever recipient of the NCAA
Hall of Champions Journey Award. This award was a result of his continued
success and contributions to college basketball.
Whitney, who has won the SWAC coach of the year award nine times,
has led the Braves to 16 regular season conference titles, seven SWAC
tournament titles and six trips to the NCAA tournament. The Braves
had a 21-10 overall record including a 16-2 mark in SWAC play during
the 2001-02 season when they won both the regular season and tournament
titles.
