Overheard at the SWAC Championship Game
Grambling head coach Doug
Williams said he met with officials from Michigan State the Sunday after the Bayou
Classic (Dec. 1) to discuss their vacant head coaching position. "We
met and we talked," said Williams. "I think the guy they want
is (Washington Redskins Defensive Coordinator) Marvin
Lewis." Williams said he was not offered the job and has not heard
from them since.
Jackson State Athletic Director
Roy Culberson expressed an interest in Tuskegee
head coach Rick Comegy, who reportedly resigned from TU last week to take the head coaching job
at Norfolk State. Culberson said, according to his
information, Comegy had not yet signed a contract. Culberson said
interviews for the JSU vacancy will begin this week in an effort to find
a replacement for Robert Hughes. Culberson said he was
also expecting to hear from JSU grad and former NFL great
Harold Jackson, now an assistant at Baylor.
Another head coach opening is at
Prairie View where the school terminated the contract of
Larry Dorsey after adding two years to his original three-year deal which was to end next season.
Championship Game title sponsor, Alamerica Bank, a
three-year-old Birmingham-based African-American financial
institution, apparently signed on for only one year. One cause of
concern was the conference including presenting sponsor, HealthSouth,
in its promotional literature. The bank, with assets of some
$45 million, was founded by Donald Watkins, the billionaire
businessman reportedly looking to buy Major League Baseball's
California Angels. Watkins was on hand for Saturday's game entertaining
a host of friends and associates in the Bank''s suite.
New SWAC Commissioner Robert Vowels,
two weeks after taking over the reins of the conference, was greeted with
the smallest crowd in the four-year history of the Championship
Game (23,727). Cold, windy conditions could have accounted for the
low numbers. Outgoing Interim Commissioner Dr. James
Frank, performed perhaps his last ceremonial duty, presenting the
championship trophy to Grambling. Frank's last day in the SWAC
office was Tuesday, Dec. 17 though he will continue to serve as
a consultant.
