WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS

- HOW THEY DID IT -

 S. C. STATE 31, Florida A&M 13

S.C. State (4-1, 1-0 MEAC) scored all five of their TDs in the first two periods to jump out to a 31-0 lead by halftime and never looked back in downing two-time MEAC champion Florida A&M (4-2, 1-1 MEAC) and establishing themselves as a force in the conference. The Bulldogs had two players to go over 100 yards rushing, RB Trevin Smith (111 yds., on 26 carries) and QB Reese McCampbell (101 yds. on 15 carries). McCampbell also threw for 177 yards, including three TD passes to Terrance Metcalf (6, 27 and 60 yds.) that staked them to an early 18-0 lead. The Bulldog defense held FAMU QBs Casey Printers and Reggie Hayes to just 16 completions in 39 attempts and only 221 passing yards while picking off three passes. Printers, who returned from injury to start the game, was replaced by Hayes who led the Rattlers to two second half scores.

GRAMBLING STATE 35, Prairie View 13

Prairie View (0-5, 0-2 SWAC W) shut out Grambling, 13-0 in the first half but was overwhelmed 35-0 in the second half by the G-Men (5-1, 2-0 SWAC W).Three quick third quarter TDs erased the halftime deficit and the Grambling defense held PV to only 59 total second half yards. QB Bruce Eugene finished 19 of 32 for 267 yards and had three TD passes.

 FAYETTEVILLE STATE 30, Winston-Salem State 26, 4 OTs

Fayetteville State (4-1, 3-0 CIAA W) scored a fourth quarter touchdown with just 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 7 and then matched WSSU (1-4, 1-2 CIAA W) score for score through three overtimes before DeAngelo Bridges' six-yard run in the fourth OT gave the Broncos the victory. The frenzied overtime saw the two teams combine for 42 points as they traded field goals in the first OT, and then touchdowns and PATs through the next two to set up the finish. But even then the fireworks weren't through as WSSU returned the PAT attempt 102 yards for the final margin. In the final analysis, head coach Kenny Phillips' troops got the biggest win in his four-year career and the Broncs have a 1 1/2 game lead in the CIAA West.

BOWIE STATE 19, Virginia Union 8

Bowie State (4-2, 3-1 CIAA E) completed the power shift in the CIAA with a big win for head coach Henry Frazier over defending champion, Virginia Union (3-2, 2-1 CIAA E). QB Maurice Hill gave the Bulldogs some much-needed offensive punch as he passed for three touchdowns (65, 10 and 8 yds.) in the win.WR Caleb Cranke (3 rec., 38 yds.) caught two of the scoring tosses. The Bulldog defense posted five sacks, picked off three VUU aerials and held the Panthers to 76 rushing yards in 42 attempts.

 BETHUNE-COOKMAN 41, Morgan State 27

BCSP #1 B-CC (6-0, 2-0 MEAC) needed every one of QB Allen Suber's 233 rushing yards and four TDs to hold off stubborn Morgan State (1-4, 0-2 MEAC). Suber rushed for TDs of 85, 16, 7 and three yards as the preseason MEAC player of the year led the Wildcats back from 14-0, 20-14 and 27-20 deficits to pull out the win. The 'Cats rushed for 412 yards and had to score 21 fourth-quarter points to escape.
