Tourney and BCSP Notes . . .

  • Alabama A&M guard Desmond Cambridge, a six-foot, senior from Nashville, Tenn., hit for a career-high 50 points in the Bulldogs 100-99 loss to Texas Southern Monday night. Cambridge was upstaged however, by TSU guard Rakim Hollis who scored on a layup with two seconds left to pull out the win. Cambridge, who leads the nation in steals (5.6 per game), had eight in Monday's game, shot 16 of 32 from the floor, including five of 13 from three-point range, and hit on 13 of 14 free throws. Cambridge eclipsed his former high of 41 set last season against Jackson State.

  • The BCSP incorrectly reported last week that only the top eight men's and women's teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would make it to Birmingham for this week's Conference Tournament (Feb. 27 - March 2). Actually, all SIAC teams will make it into tournament play. The SIAC men's seventh through tenth seeds will play-in on Wednesday (2/27) to the men's Thursday quarterfinals. The top eight men's and women's teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will make it to that conference's Tournament (March 5, 8-9). Men's and women's first round games in the SWAC will be played on Tuesday, March 5 at the home of the highest seeded team. Men's and women's semifinals (12, 2, 5:30 and 7:30 pm) will be played on Friday, March 8, with the finals on Saturday (3 and 6 pm), March 9, in Birmingham at Fair Park Arena.

  • By virtue of its win over Brescia University Saturday, the Lady Marauders of Central State (25-1) will host the NAIA Independent Regional on Thursday, Feb. 28 and get a first-round bye. The winner of the regional will advance to the NAIA Women's National Tournament held in Jackson, Tenn., March 13-19. The Lady Marauders, in their first year under head coach Patricia Tramble, have made 13 straight trips to the national tournament all under former coach and now athletic director, Theresa Check.

  • Senior guard Ron Williamson capped off a dazzling 41-point performance with a tip-in at the buzzer to hand conference-leading Hampton (22-6, 16-1) its first MEAC loss of the season, 82-81 Monday at Howard (16-11, 11-6). Williamson hit on nine of 14 three-pointers and shot 14 of 20 from the field.
