BCSP: The Banner of Black College Sports

BCSP Notes . . .

  • A critical stretch of games over the next week between leaders in the Southwestern Athletic Conference men's race may determine the regular season champion.
League-leading Alcorn State (14-7, 13-0 SWAC) has a four-and-a-half game lead over Alabama A&M (13-7, 8-4 SWAC) and Alabama State (13-10, 8-4 SWAC), the teams tied for second in the league, with just five conference games left on its schedule.
The Braves are at Alabama State Saturday and at Alabama A&M Monday. A win in either of those contests would clinch at least a tie for the title for head coach Davey Whitney's Braves.

  • The biggest game in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association will be in Raleigh where E. Div. co-leader Shaw (18-4, 7-1 CIAA E) faces W. Div. leader Johnson C. Smith (18-4, 7-0 CIAA W). While the game does not count in divisional standings it could be a preview of the March 2 Tournament final game. JC Smith has moved up to 19th in the latest NABC Div. II poll while Shaw has dropped to 21st.
The hottest team however in the CIAA is Bowie State (16-6, 6-1 CIAA E) who defeated Shaw Saturday 94-77 to grab a piece of the E. Div. lead. The Bulldogs have won eight straight games, beginning with a 91-89 overtime win at JCSU on Jan. 15. Bowie State and Fayetteville State (13-6, 3-3 CIAA W) are the only CIAA teams with wins over Shaw and JC Smith.

  • Saturday's Mid Eastern Athletic Conference matchup of league-leader Hampton (19-5, 13-0 MEAC) and fourth-place South Carolina State (11-14, 8-6 MEAC) has been moved back to 2 p.m. to accommodate a national television audience. The game will be carried live on the ComCast and MBC Networks.

  • Morgan State University has officially announced the hiring of Donald Hill-Eley as its new head football coach. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Dr. David Thomas. Hill, who served as Morgan State's Offensive Coordinator last season, replaces Stanley Mitchell, whose contract was not renewed after posting a 5-27 three-year career record. Coach Hill becomes the eleventh coach since legendary coach Earl C. Banks retired in 1973. Hill-Eley is a Virginia Union graduate.

  • St. Augustine's swept the CIAA Indoor Track Championships winning both men's and women's competition by more than 70 points.
