BCSP Notes . . .
- Albany State University football player,
DeRodrick Nash, was named top defensive player of the
2002 Whataburger Cactus Bowl All-Star Game, held Jan.
11 at Texas A&M University - Kingsville's Javelina
Stadium.
Nash led the East All-Stars with 10 tackles, had
one interception and one tackle for a loss in the
NCAA Division II all-star game, which featured the West
All-Stars and the East All-Stars. The East team defeated
the West team 42-12 before a crowd of 12,500. The
East All-Stars' win was the second victory for the team in
the game's nine-year history. The West leads the series,
6-2-1.
Nash, a 6-3, 215-pounder from Colquitt, Ga.,
was one of three players who received individual honors
at a post-game reception. During his 2001 season at
Albany State University, Nash recorded 45 tackles with
27 solos in 10 games. He had two interceptions for
seven yards and two fumble recoveries for 34 yards for
the Golden Rams.
Other players from the SIAC were James Schoolfield of Fort Valley
State University, who had two receptions for 31 yards, and defensive end Damon
Tolson of Tuskegee University, who recorded two tackles and one sack.
- Alabama A&M guard Desmond
Cambridge leads NCAA Div. I in steals, at 4.7 per game.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff guard Khadija
Haqq leads the nation's Div. I free throw shooters at 95.3% (41 of 43).
- Shaw University has tentatively scheduled a
press conference for Friday, Jan. 18 to announce a
new football coach.
- Morgan State has apparently narrowed its choices for a new football
coach to Fort Valley State head man Kent Schoolfield and assistant
Donald Hill. But speculation remains that MSU President Dr. Earl Richardson
is trying to convince NFL Hall of Famer Art Shell to take the job.
Shell, a classmate of Richardson's at Maryland State, now Maryland-Eastern
Shore, reportedly asked for $250,000 to take the position, out of the school's
budget range.
