BCSP Notes . . .

  • This year's Whataburger Cactus Bowl All-Star Game will include seven players from the CIAA and SIAC in a game featuring the top 80 players from NCAA Division II schools.

    Winston-Salem State safety Stephon Kelly and defensive end Robert Mackey will be joined by Virginia Union defensive end James Atkins, Tuskegee defensive end Damon Tolson and cornerbacks Keyon Nash (Albany State) and Michael Posey (Livingstone) on the East defensive squad.

    Fort Valley State wide receiver Kent Schoolfield, Jr. is the lone HBCU representative on the East offensive team.

    The NCAA Division II All-Star game was held in Fargo, N.D., for the first seven years. It was the Snow Bowl in North Dakota but underwent a name change when moved to South Texas last year.

    Fox Sports Southwest will televise the game live Friday, January 11 at 6:30 pm (CST) from Texas A&M-Kingsville's Javelina Stadium. It is also available nationally and internationally on satellite dishes (Direct TV system channel 643 | Dish Network system channel 416).

  • Alabama State senior quarterback Darnell Kennedy, the SWAC offensive player of the year, was 9 of 27 for 99 yards with one interception and rushed seven times for 21 yards as his Gray team lost 28-10 Christmas Day in the Blue-Gray Classic on his home field, Montgomery's Cramton Bowl. Kennedy was joined on the Gray team by teammate, Tango McCauley, a first team all-SWAC offensive lineman, Grambling linebacker Robert Taylor, a first team all-SWAC selection, Winston-Salem State safety Stephon Kelly, the CIAA defensive player of the year, Jackson State receivers T. C. Taylor and Lawrence Story, and Andre Arnold, a Grambling State defensive back.

    Taylor, a first team all-SWAC selection, had two catches for 15 yards while Story did not make a catch.

  • North Carolina A&T sophomore safety/kick returner Curtis Deloatch was the only black college player selected to the Sports Network I-AA Football All-America first team.

    Deloatch, who scored on five of his 20 punt returns and led all I-AA players averaging 26.5 yards per return was picked as the first team kick returner. Deloatch also had two interceptions returned for TDs.

    Howard senior defensive end Oby Arah and linebacker Tracy White were picked to the second team defense. Third team members included A&T running back Maurice Hicks, Jackson State senior wide receiver T. C. Taylor, Alabama State senior offensive lineman Tango McCauley and his teammate, punter David Beckford.

  • White, Beckford and Grambling linebacker Robert Taylor were named first team I-AA all-Americans by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
  • Tuskegee running back Bobby Wilson, picked to the second team, was the only black college selection to the D2Football.com All-American team. Morehouse defensive back Ronald Smalls received honorable mention. Black college players were shut out of the Daktronics All-American team.
  • Among black college seniors ranked among the best at their positions by Blesto and the National Scouting Combine are the following:
