BCSP Notes . . .
- Shaw University of the CIAA,
under head coach Joel Hopkins, is off to an excellent start at 7-1 led by
high-scoring guard Ronald Murray. Murray, at 6-1, is averaging 27.7
points per game from his swing position trailing only Longwood's
Jason Pryor (33.3 ppg.) in NCAA Div. II scoring statistics.
Last year's CIAA Tournament Most Valuable Player,
six-foot, senior guard Antoine Sims,
who led Johnson C. Smith to the tourney and South Atlantic Region titles last year, is also among
the top ten scorers in the nation. He is currently tenth at 22.5 points
per game.
Just behind Sims at 11th in the nation is
Virginia State swingman Levar Griffin
who's putting in 22.3 ppg. Tuskegee's 6-6 forward
Amos Conyers checks in at 15th at 22.1 points
per contest.
- The undefeated men of St. Augustine's
(6-0) are ranked as the top team in the NCAA Div. II South Atlantic Region though
the Falcons have yet to crack the national top 25.
Instead, 7-1 Shaw (17th) and 8-1
Winston-Salem State (25th) are in the national poll. In the region, WSSU is
third, defending CIAA champ Johnson C. Smith
is third and Shaw is fourth. Fayetteville State
(5-3) is eighth in the region.
Kentucky Wesleyan (10-0) is currently the top-ranked team
in the nation.
SIAC men's leader Fort Valley State
(5-3) is sixth in the South Region rankings.
- On the women's side of NCAA Div. II basketball,
Johnson C. Smith is making the most noise.
The Lady Golden Bulls are off to a 10-1 start and are
ranked as the top team in the women's South Atlantic region. They are
lead by Blanche Doctor's 16.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
