SIAC STARS: The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has unveiled the 2001 edition of its all-conference football team. Morehouse College head football coach, Anthony Jones got the nod as SIAC Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He leads a contingent of seven Maroon Tigers selected first team All-SIAC, and two members on the second team. Included in that number are the SIAC's Offensive and Defensive

Players of the Year. Morehouse quarterback Chivalrik Daughtry was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Year and Maroon Tiger linebacker, John Grant, got the nod as SIAC Defensive Player of the Year. In nine games, Daughtry completed 80-of-153 pass attempts for 1,318 yards and eight touchdowns. Grant was second in the league in tackling with 99 total tackles (59 solo tackles). He recorded two QB sacks, 18 tackles for losses of 58 yards and forced two fumbles. Bobby Wilson of Tuskegee, the league's top rusher, and the fourth leading rusher in NCAA Division II football is the recipient of the George H. Hobson Offensive Back of the Year Award. Wilson finished the year with 1,771 rushing yards and scored 21 touchdowns, averaging 161.0 yards per game in eleven games. Fort Valley State center, Phillip Shiflet, was the top choice for the W.S.M. Banks Lineman of the Year Award. The Banks Award is awarded annually to the best lineman in the SIAC. Shiflet was named SIAC Player of the Week three times during the regular season. Orlando Wiley, also of Fort Valley State, got the nod as SIAC Player of the Year. Wiley was Fort Valley's top rusher and the SIAC's second leading rusher with 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns.

MITCHELL OUT AT MORGAN: A 5-28 record over three seasons including a 2-9 mark this year has apparently cost Stanley Mitchell his job as the Morgan State football coach. The University has made no official announcement but reportedly Mitchell has been informed that his three-year contract will not be renewed. Mitchell, the tenth coach in 28 years for the Bears since the retirement of coaching legend Earl Banks, came to Morgan from Baltimore's Dunbar High School, where he won state football championships in 1994 and 1995.

GETTING ANOTHER LOOK: Alabama State standouts Darnell Kennedy and Tango McCauley and Winston-Salem State safety Stephon Kelly will get a chance to showcase their talents before pro scouts in postseason all-star games. Kennedy, McCauley and Kelly have been been selected to play in the 2001 Blue Gray All-Star Game, on Christmas Day at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala. Kelly will also participate in the Cactus Bowl on January 11, along with Rams teammate Robert Mackey. Kennedy, a 6-foot senior quarterback from Mobile, Ala., earned first team All-SWAC honors and was tabbed the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year after passing for 3,151 yards and 33 touchdowns. McCauley, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound senior offense lineman from Oklahoma City, Okla., also earned first team All-SWAC honors. Kelly, the CIAA 2001 Defensive Player of the Year has been named to the 2001 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II All-America Team after leading CIAA in interceptions with eight and passes defended with 25.
