ALL-STARS: Record-setting quarterback Darnell Kennedy was named the
SWAC Offensive Player of the Year and led a contingent of eight
players from E. Div. champion Alabama State named to the all-conference
first team announced last week by a vote of the conference's head coaches. West
Division champ Grambling matched ASU's output on the first team and put
another five players on the second team. Prairie View defensive back Bobby
Perry, who tied for the conference lead with six interceptions, was
named the defensive player of the year. Grambling freshman placekicker Brian
Morgan, who led the conference in scoring (93 points) was named the freshman
of the year while fellow freshman Donald Carrie, who led Alcorn State
to its first winning record in four years, was named the conference's top
newcomer. Kennedy passed for 3,151 yards and 33 TDs this year and finished his
career with 11,467 passing yards, 100 passing TDs, and 12,551 yards of total offense.
He finished third in his career in SWAC passing yards , third in touchdowns (behind
Willie Totten of Mississippi Valley and Steve McNair of Alcorn
State). He is fourth all-time in I-AA history in passing and third in total
offense.
First Team OFFENSE DEFENSE
MEAC ALL-STARS: Senior running back Maurice Hicks, who sat out the last three games with a knee injury but still led the conference in rushing, was named the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference offensive player of the year as the conference announced postseason football honors last week. Hicks rushed for 1,325 yards in eight games, scored a conference-leading 15 touchdowns and broke a Div. I record when he ran for 437 yards against Morgan State. Howard junior linebacker Tracy White, last year's winner, also walked away with this year's outstanding defensive player award. White piled up 108 tackles from his inside linebacker position and had eight sacks. North Carolina A&T senior guard Qasim Mitchell won the outstanding lineman award while freshman Deon Rhuebottom of Delaware State was named Rookie of the Year. Billy Joe of conference champion Florida A&M was named the league's outstanding coach.
