Jackson State quarterback Robert Kent threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns as the Tigers ruined Alcorn State's chances of a SWAC East Division title with a 52-28 win Saturday in Jackson, Ms. A Capital City Classic crowd of 49,783 watched the Mississippi rivals battle on near even terms through the first three quarters before JSU (7-3, 5-2 SWAC E) scored 22 unanswered fourth quarter points to pull out the win. The loss ends a storybook ride for head coach Johnny Thomas and Alcorn State (5-5, 4-2 SWAC E) which had bounced back from an 0-11 2000 campaign to challenge for the SWAC East Division title. The loss gives the title and a spot in the Dec. 1 SWAC Championship Game to Alabama State (8-2, 6-1 SWACE), who defeated Mississippi Valley State, 57-24 Saturday. Alcorn State freshman quarterback Donald Carrie did his part, completing 23 of 51 passes for 292 yards and all four Alcorn State scores. Kris Peters, who led the Braves with nine receptions for 138 yards, grabbed scoring tosses of 24 and 33 yards while Rob Gilmore had 49 and 4-yard TD receptions. Gilmore's 33-yarder in the third quarter brought the Braves to within 30-28. Tanaka Counselor did most of the damage on the ground for the Tiges rambling for 161 yards on 21 carries including opening the scoring with a 20-yard TD burst.
