TEAM: East Division champ Virginia Union and West Divison champ Winston-Salem
State dominate selections to the 2001 all-CIAA football team announced
last week. VUU, who won the conference title Saturday over WSSU, placed seven
players on the first team all-conference squad while the Rams had six. WSSU defensive
back Stephon Kelly, a transfer from South Carolina State, was named
the conference's defensive player of the year. Kelly led the CIAA with nine interceptions
from his safety position. Johnson C. Smith running back Jimmy Bell,
the conference's best ground gainer with 861 yards (107.6 ypg.), was named offensive
player of the year. Henry Frazier, who guided perennial doormat Bowie
State to a 6-3 record and second place finish in the conference's East division
was named coach of the year.

SIAC HOOPS: Reigning Player of the Year, Darius Wade and his
Morehouse Maroon Tigers are the choices of coaches to shine this season
in the men's SIAC. Wade, who averaged 22 points per game last season as
a freshman to lead Morehouse to the 2000 regular season title, leads the preseason
all-conference team while the Tigers outpolled Fort Valley State and 2000
tournament champion, Kentucky State for team honors. 2000 champion FortValley
State was picked to take the women's crown and placed three players on the
preseason all-conference team.
