BCSP Notes . . .

  • New Number One
    L. C. Cole's
7-2 Alabama State Hornets have moved into the top spot in the BCSP rankings for the first time ever, just two years after Cole took over after leaving Tennessee State.

The Hornets (5-1 SWAC E), ranked third last week after knocking off previously undefeated Grambling State, rose to the top spot after losses Saturday by #1 North Carolina A&T and #2 Tennessee State. They lead the SWAC E. Divison with a 5-1 record and are 23rd in the Sports Network I-AA national poll.

The Hornets have won seven straight games after losing two games to open the season to Alcorn State (20-17) and Southern (32-7). They played Alcorn State without starting quarterback Darnell Kennedy who sat out the game because of an academic suspension. Kennedy returned for the Southern game but had not rounded into shape completing only nine of 26 passes for 43 yards with three interceptions.

Since then the senior signal-caller has thrown for 2,345 yards (293 ypg.) and 27 touchdowns in the seven wins. Kenndy is currently ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division I-AA in career passing with 10,825 yards. Kennedy is also tied for fourth in career touchdown passes with 93. He is now fifth in NCAA career total offense with 11,726 yards.

But the Alcorn loss could come back to hurt the Hornets. The Braves (5-4, 4-1 SWAC E) have kept pace and would take the E. Div. title if they can get wins over Jackson State this week and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 24.
