HOW THEY DID IT
Game Recaps

  • GRAMBLING STATE 43, Texas Southern 3
QB Bruce Eugene (21-12-0) passed for 230 yards and two TDs as the BCSP #1 Tigers (7-0, 5-0 SWAC W) stayed undefeated and moved to third nationally in the I-AA polls. WR Levi Washington had both TD receptions and totalled five catches for 110 yards. GSU's special teams scored on a blocked punt return by Travis Massey and an 82-yard punt return from D. J. Clay.

  • E. ILLINOIS 52, Tennessee State 49
Ninth-ranked (I-AA) E. Illinois knocked Tennessee State (6-1, 2-1 OVC) from the unbeaten ranks on a last-second field goal despite 382 passing yards and five TDs from Blue Tiger QB Shannon Harris. Harris completed 29 of 43 passes and also rushed for two TDs to have a hand in all seven TSU scores. EIU rose to sixth in this week's I-AA polls.

  • N. C. A&T 16, Bethune-Cookman 14
A&T (6-1, 4-1 MEAC) tailback Maurice Hicks ran for 233 yards on 36 carries and scored on a 15-yard TD run to pace the Aggies over B-CC (5-2, 4-1 MEAC). A punt returned by B-CC late in the fourth quarter for a TD was nullified because of a penalty but gave the Wildcats the ball deep in A&T territory. The Aggie defense however knocked B-CC out of field goal range to preserve the victory. B-CC QB Allen Suber accounted for 248 total yards (128 rushing, 120 passing) in the loss.

  • ALABAMA STATE 35, Alabama A&M 0
Alabama State QB Darnell Kennedy shredded the A&M defense for 450 passing yards and four TDs in the rout before 55,133 at Birmingham's Magic City Classic. Kennedy also had a one-yard run for the Hornets' other score.
