What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
I-AA RANKINGS:
Undefeated Grambling State (6-0) has moved to sixth in both the Sports
Network and USA Today/ESPN NCAA Div. I-AA polls in the latest results
released Tuesday. The Tigers, under head coach Doug Williams, are joined
in both polls by Tennessee State (6-0), North Carolina A&T (5-1)
and Florida A&M (5-2). TSU, under second-year head coach James Reese,
is the only other black college undefeated team. They are 13th in the SN poll,
and 14th in the USA Today/ESPN ranking. Bill Hayes' A&T Aggies are
19th in the SN ranking and 18th in USA Today while Billy Joe's Rattlers
of FAMU are 23rd in both polls. The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman under head
coach Alvin Wyatt made their first appearance in the rankings getting the
final (25th) spot in the Sports Network poll.
DIV. II RANKINGS: Tuskegee (5-1) is the only black college team to make
the Top 25, ranked 15th in the latest NCAA Div. II poll. In the all-important
(to playoff hopes) regional rankings, Tuskegee (ineligible for the playoffs) is
fourth, Winston-Salem State (6-2) is fifth, Fort Valley State (6-2)
is eighth and Fayetteville State (6-2) is tenth. The top four teams from
each of the country's four regions make up the 16-team Div. II playoff field.
