- How They Did It -

  • ­ GRAMBLING STATE 30, Jackson State 16
    Grambling QB Randy Hymes threw two TD passes and ran for two scores while the Tiger defense picked off Jackson State QB Robert Kent six times as GSU (6-0, 4-0 SWAC W) stayed undefeated. Kent, the SWAC's passing leader, threw for 307 yards (27 of 46) but was victimized by the six picks, four by GSU defensive back Denmark Reed. WR Levi Washington caught both of Hymes' scoring tosses (14, 13) and finished with five catches for 96 yards. The loss pushes JSU (4-2, 3-2 SWAC E) behind Alabama State and Alcorn State in the SWAC East race.

  • ­ TENNESSEE STATE 55, Tenn.-Martin 7
    Fullback Karon Key ran for three short scores and QB Shannon Harris threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee State (6-0, 2-0 OVC) remained as the second black college unbeaten team with an easy win. TSU jumped out to a 27-0 lead at the half, then outscored UTM 28-7 the rest of the way. TSU, led by Danny Roberson's 12 tackles, converted four UT Martin turnovers into scores.

  • ­ TUSKEGEE 35, Fort Valley State 28
    RB Bobby Wilson rushed for 219 yards and scored four touchdowns (8, 51, 4, 48) as the Golden Tigers (5-1, 2-1 SIAC) got back on the winning track at home. Tuskegee QB Aaron James (7-12-1) passed for 140 yards and a TD. FVSU (6-2, 5-1 SIAC) fought back from a 35-14 second half deficit to get within 35-28 with 8:17 left on a option pass from RB Orlando Wiley to QB Cecil Lester but they did not score again.Wiley, the SIAC scoring leader, rushed for only 64 yards on 23 carries and did not get into the end zone.

  • ­ N. C. A&T 76, Howard 30
    NC A&T RB Maurice Hicks ran for four touchdowns (11, 51, 11, 6) in the first half and the NC A&T defense returned three first half interceptions for touchdowns as the Aggies (5-1, 3-1 MEAC) ran out to a 62-6 halftime lead in the rout in Greensboro. Hicks, the leading rusher in I-AA football, sat out the second half after gaining 114 yards on 11 carries. Back-up RB Cornelius Gary added 119 rushing yards on nine carries and RB Michaux Hollingsworth ran for two TDs as A&T rushed for 383 yards. The Aggies got their fourth interception return for a score in the fourth period to break their school-scoring record (previously 73). Howard (2-5, 1-3 MEAC) quarterbacks combined to pass for 577 yards and five TDs, most coming in the second half against reserve defenders. Three Bison receivers went over 100 yards.

  • ­ FAYETTEVILLE STATE 27, J. C. Smith 13
    RB Nathaniel Benton ran for 139 yards including a 73-yard TD gallop as Fayetteville State (6-2, 4-1 CIAA W) kept their CIAA West Division hopes alive. Benton added a 10-yard third quarter TD run after JCSU had closed to 14-13. FSU QB Duane Taylor, who scored the Broncos first TD on an eight-yard run, sealed the game with a TD pasto Carnel Thornton with 10:09 left.

  • ­ CLARK-ATLANTA 17, Albany State 14
    CAU (1-6, 1-3 SIAC) got their first win of the year as QB Michael White (31-15-0) threw for 198 yards and two TDs. RB Terran McFadden helped keep the ASU defense off-balance rushing for 104 yards on 16 carries. A second quarter 31-yard field goal by Jue Mitho-Lewis proved to be the difference in the game.

  • ­ ALABAMA STATE 23, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 17
    Quarterback Darnell Kennedy (31-16-1, 204 yds.) scored with 20 seconds left on a five-yard run that gave ASU (4-2 , 3-1 SWAC E) its fourth consecutive win and kept the Hornets in line for a spot in the SWAC title game. The Hornets scored two TDs and a field goal in the fourth quarter to overcome a 17-7 deficit and defeat UAPB (3-3, 1-3 SWAC W). With Jackson State's loss, the Hornets take over the lead in the SWAC East. ASU RB Larry Bias ran for 201 yards on 26 carries and had a TD.

  • ­ ALCORN STATE 48, Prairie View 20
    Alcorn State (3-3, 2-1 SWAC E), coming off a winless 2000 campaign, scored 28 third quarter points to come back from the short end of a 14-13 halftime score and down the Panthers (2-5, 1-3 SWAC W). QB Donald Carrie (17-11-0, 226 yds., 4 TDs) threw three of his scoring tosses in the third quarter, two to WR Kris Peters. ASU RB Cletis Walker ran 18 times for 121 yards and two TDS. The Braves are tied atop the SWAC East Division standings (with Alabama State).
