SWAC HOOP PICKS: Defending champion Alabama State had three players
named to the all-Southwestern Athletic Conference men's preseason basketball
team, including Player of the Year, Tyrone Levett, but Alcorn State
edged out the Hornets as the team picked to win the conference. On the women's
side, Grambling State junior forward Shrieka Evans was picked as
the preseason "Player of the Year" and Prairie View A&M center
Tanisha Lee was tabbed preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Southern
edged out Alabama State as the women's team to beat this year. The selections,
voted on by the league's head coaches, were announced at the SWAC Media Day in
Birmingham, Al., on Oct. 11.

CIAA HOOP PICKS: North Carolina Central (West) and Virginia State
(East) were picked as the women's favorites while Fayetteville State (West)
and Shaw (East) garnered the honors for the men as the CIAA coaches'
preseason choices for league honors were unveiled Oct. 11 at the conference's
annual press conference in Raleigh. Players of the year from 2000, North Carolina
Central center Amba Kongolo (women) and St. Paul's center Derrick
Singleton (men) led a cast of 12 players selected to the preseason all-CIAA
team.
