UNDER THE BANNER What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
HOOPS CLASSICS: The premier black college basketball classics for the 2001-2002 season are set. The 3rd Legacy Classic in Charlotte will be held the day (Sun., Jan. 20) before the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday while the 2nd Harbor City Classic will be held in Baltimore on Thanksgiving weekend (Sat., Nov. 24). Last year, the Legacy Classic drew a record-crowd of just over 13,000 fans to the Charlotte Coliseum to watch North Carolina A&T take on North Carolina Central and Johnson C. Smith battle Winston-Salem State. Those same teams will square off this year with the NC A&T/NCCU game set to tip at 3:30 p.m. and the JCSU/WSSU battle set for 5:30 p.m. In Baltimore, J. C. Smith will face Virginia Union in the 6 p.m. opener, and city rivals Morgan State and Coppin State will tip at 8:15 p.m. Those same teams met last year in the inaugural Harbor City event which drew nearly 5,000 fans to the Baltimore Arena. Classics founder Cary Mitchell says America Online (AOL), ComCast Cable, Time Warner and BlackVoices.com are on board this year as first-time sponsors. Tickets are available through TicketMaster.
